This
plate is worn out on most of the roadsters we see. How to
check yours? Take the vacuum advance off of the outside of
the distributor. You can then move the bracket where the
advance unit was attached to this plate, using your finger.
It should move back and forth smoothly, with a small amount
of force, and not "click" or feel like it's getting stuck in
one spot. The plate is actually two plates with ball
bearings between them. Eventually the balls gouge one of the
plates. When this plate is worn, the advance setting will
jump around instead of moving smoothly as the position of
your throttle plate changes as you drive. Not only does this
make the engine unable to make throttle transitions
smoothly, but your mileage is reduced as the spark advance
is almost never where it needs to be for best
efficiency.
